Things in Erin’s Head

I woke up last week with the worst case of cottonmouth. (And alas – it wasn’t because I was doing anything illicit, or shady, or fun… haha).  I was slowly waking to the sounds of my neighborhood mockingbird. My eyes were still closed, and I noticed my mouth was agape, still in the zone of deep, sleepy breaths. I attempted to swallow, but it felt like a shop vac had sucked my mouth dry. My tongue was stuck to the roof of my mouth and as my brain told the muscle to go ahead and move, it peeled itself away, dry and cottony.

It was gross.

I have been struggling with self-diagnosed dehydration for a solid two weeks now. Dry mouth, lips, itchy skin, and dull hair. It’s making me crazy. I admit, I am not a stellar water drinker, but I can’t say I’ve ever experienced anything quite like this. I started a new water supplement that has probiotics, hydration elements, and hyaluronic acid and it has not helped (it sounds a little crazy but I’m wondering if it’s somehow dehydrating me… could that be??). I tried some Liquid IV – which has topped up my hydration in the past when I’ve had busy massage weeks and neglected my water intake. I considered actual IV hydration, but there’s something in me that just doesn’t WANT to (I can’t explain that either).

But no matter what I’ve done, how much water I drink, I feel like it just runs through me and isn’t ATTACHING to anything. (Yet, I don’t have a headache, my urine is light in color, and I’m not constipated…) I understand I have crossed into the realm of too much information, BUT I share these things (all of these things) because people don’t talk about them and you might be feeling this way too…

Yesterday I asked one of my friends what they thought, because frankly, when my brain isn’t working sometimes I need people to state the obvious to me and they said, “If it was me, I’d eat some hydrating foods like watermelon, cucumber, apples, grapes…” And I trotted off to the store to give it a try.

Fun Fact: I do NOT like watermelon. I know, I know, it’s one of the kooky things about me… but I chose to make a watermelon, cucumber, feta salad with honey-lime vinaigrette for lunch (recipe from The Mediterranean Dish HERE). With the first bite my body said, “FINALLY, you got the message.” It was the absolute BEST thing I have tasted in a long time. It was satiating a craving I hadn’t yet identified, and my body just wanted MORE. (it’s amazing what our bodies will tell us if we just get quiet and listen…).

I wish I could say that the one lunch cured my seemingly chronic dehydration – it has not – but I’m going to keep up with the hydrating foods (and today I’m going to add a shot of pickle juice) and see where it leads me. Don’t hate me for this neighbors, but I’m also hoping for a teeny bit more humidity here in South Florida, because all of me does much better with a little more moisture in the air.

I’m absolutely curious to know what YOU do to up your hydration game! Sending you all the happy water vibes and lots of love…
