Things in Erin’s Head

Not for nuthin… but today is my daddy’s birthday.

And Sunday is Father’s Day.

So my dad has been on my mind. What meals he likes, what activities he enjoys, and dad jokes.

Or the lack thereof.

Please don’t misunderstand, I’m not referring to a lack of HUMOR – my dad is really funny – but typical dad jokes are not his jam. You will never hear him say, “I’m reading a book on anti-gravity right now, and I can’t put it down!”

Nooooo.

As much as he loves his Italian food, he will never pun about his pasta. (“What do you call a fake noodle? An IMPASTA!”)

Never.

But he does have some classic one liners, that may or may not begin with, “Not for nuthin’…”

Living in a house with three girls he would inevitably be left standing by the door waiting for us, “We’re coming,” we’d holler from various corners of the house.

 “Yeah, and so is Christmas.”

If we were being particularly inquisitive after he came home after a finishing a bell-to-bell day at the car dealership, he might interrupt our chatter with, “What? Are you writing a book?” and when we got devilish and thought we could simply outsmart him by saying, “Yes,” his retort was always quick and witty, “Well leave this chapter out.”

It always made us laugh.

Some of my favorite Father’s Days were spent with me on the back of his Harley or racing RC cars (he raced them and I ran to pick them up when they flipped over).

For many years we lived thousands of miles apart. Now mere city blocks separate us. So tonight I got to spend my dad’s birthday with him. And my mom. And my sister. And my grandparents. And my husband. That’s a lot of miracles sitting around one table, sharing a meal. And Sunday we get to do it again. And my heart is so grateful.

So not for nuthin… I hope you get to celebrate your dad (or favorite father figure) this weekend. Either in person, or if your dad isn’t with you, I hope you have a few quiet moments to linger on the sweet memories that fill your heart.

Because it’s all about love…
