“Now THIS is why I live in South Florida.”

It was the first thing that popped into my head this morning as I walked out the door at 7:45am for a follow up doctor’s appointment. It was not abusively hot. I was perfectly comfortable in my shorts, tshirt and sandals, and there was an ever so slight crispness to the air. I actually took a moment to breathe it in and appreciate it. 

I trotted off to see my primary care physician with my copy of The Patient Handbook in hand (Yes, I do use my own resources). In the waiting room I double checked my list of prescriptions and supplements, did a quick scan using the Body Scan Checklist, and reviewed the questions I had been adding to my Appointment Notes pages all week. The appointment was relatively quick and smooth because I was prepared. I have my notes to follow up with my specialists and to do a little responsible research on my own. I was in and out within an hour.

It feels a little eerie and surreal to me, but I am oddly prepared for 2024 (although you cannot hold me to this because I have zero idea what I will be like come Thanksgiving when I typically feel like the remains of the calendar are hurling themselves at me full throttle). Part of it is because several months ago I released myself from any “extra” obligations. I am speaking at the Society for Transplant Social Workers national convention in a few weeks and I have dedicated a lot of time to really showing up with insightful information for that group on all the things caregivers never talk about… and the balance of the year is for connections and building. Dreaming and mapping. But from a place of balance, joy, and creation (instead of forced, anxious, production).
